We want to share our experience with North of Hadrian's Kilts and Celtic Clothing.
On January 2, 2024 we went to this shop and met with Jackson to select and order fabric to have three kilts and two wraps made for a 30th wedding anniversary celebration in Scotland in October 2024. We chose a tartan from Marton Mills, paid a $1000.00 deposit and were told the fabric would arrive sometime in April or May.
North of Hadrian's states on their website that it may take up to 20 weeks for a kilt to be made. We had not heard anything by the first week of June so we called and were told it was on it's way with no set arrival time due to customs. We called again the first few days of July and were told it was in customs and should be here soon. On July 19th Jackson messaged us that "our order had finally arrived".
It had been more than 28 weeks since placing our order.
As Jackson and members of our family were away we were not able to come into the shop for remeasuring until August 17th. Now almost 33 weeks since placing our order.
When we got to the shop Jackson rolled out the fabric and started to get ready to remeasure us for the three kilts. We noticed right away that it was not the fabric that we had ordered - it was totally different. When we stated that it wasn't what we ordered, Jackson replied that we were correct but there hadn't been time to get our fabric so they defaulted to a different Mill-the House of Edgar.
We said that he must let his customers know when they aren't getting the fabric they chose and paid for and Jackson said that he does not inform his customers of that and that "it has never been an issue".
Well, it was a huge issue for us as the fabric was very different than what we had chosen and wanted.
Jackson had also encouraged us to still have our kilts made with this fabric as he doubted that we could get the one we wanted in time, but if it the fabric we wanted did arrive then he said that we wouldn't have to keep the kilts. We did not choose to do this as we did not want or like this fabric.
We contacted Marton Mills and House of Edgar and neither could provide any record of any order made for our fabric and North of Hadrian's could not produce any Purchase Order or any documents showing that any order had been made for our fabric either. Interestingly, they had a wrap made in their shop from the same House of Edgar tartan he tried to have us use.
Also, interestingly, after refusing the House of Edgar fabric Jackson then found that Lochcarron Mills did have a fabric almost identical to the one we wanted from Marton Mills. They had it in stock and were able to ship within a week to ten days.
There was a real lack of transparency with North of Hadrian's. It appeared that potentially they were simply trying to get rid of old stock that they had and just hoped we didn't remember what we had picked as it had been so long since placing our order. Luckily, we had photos on our phones of our selection, as well as the Mill name and order number. We knew exactly what we had ordered.
Either Jackson was being flat-out deceitful or he had just taken huge liberties by not discussing our options with us. It was terrible service and we no longer trusted North of Hadrian's at all, making it impossible to continue with them.
We were able to get a refund, however they had placed us in a very bad position with less than 8 weeks to order fabric, find a kiltmaker and get three kilts made for a very important event for our family. They created a great deal of unnecessary stress for us.
We hope that they have reconsidered their lack of transparency and/or their practice of not disclosing to their customers the changes being made to their orders.
Due to our extremely negative experience we would not recommend using North of Hadrian's Kilts and Celtic Clothing to anyone under any circumstances.
We have included a photo - the fabric on the right is what we chose and the one on the left is the one they presented as our choice. As you can see the patterns and colors are very different.
